Recently I've decided to stop playing bar gigs and focus on playing my own music in mostly acoustic guitar mode. I will continue to rock out once in a while, but I think those days are coming to a close for me. I've always loved folk and country music, and I've been enjoying writing and performing more in those genres. My new CD "Cars & Lovers" is about half and half; rock mixed with folkier acoustic stuff. I like to call it "Cosmic American Music" (a phrase coined by the great Gram Parsons), because it incorporates elements of all the great American genres: rock, country, folk, blues, and maybe at times even a little jazz. The release date is set for Feb 2008 - we'll see if I can make it happen. I am already planning and writing my next CD, which should be out by late 2008, God willing. An acoustic deconstruction "Best Of" CD is also planned, along with several other projects currently in embryonic stages.
Throughout the year I perform as an acoustic singer songwriter at several cherished recurring gatherings. One of my favorites is the 2nd sunday night of every month at 6pm at the Waterfront Hotel in Fells Point (Baltimore). It's called S.N.A.F.U. (Sunday Night All Folked Up), and it's a songwriter's showcase hosted by my pal David Morrealle. You'll see some really good songwriters there in a song circle acoustic environment. Sometimes I perform as well as doing a bit of guest hosting when David M is unable to make it. Another fantastic open mic night that I love to play is the one hosted by Hugh McGowan every tuesday night at The Burren in Somerville, MA (Boston area). Sure, it's a long drive, but always well worth the trip. I try to go at least once a quarter, and Hugh and I usually end up doing a couple of gis together while I'm up there. Watch my Shows Page for news of these Boston trips. And last but certainly not least is the grand daddy of all jams, the Kerrville Folk Festival. Held each year starting on Memorial Day weekend, it is a 3 week love fest of song, creativity, affirmation, and utopian togetherness. Great performers adorn the stages every night, and then the various campfires host some of the best song circles in America 'til dawn - unplugged and unpretentious. You really have to see it to believe it. If you're a songwriter or just someone who loves great songs and the people who write them, this festival is THE musical event of the year. Also check out the short version, affectionately called "Little Folk", that happens every year on Labor Day weekend.
If you want to know more about me, come and see one of my SHOWS. I'm still playing somewhat regularly in the Annapolis / DC / Baltimore area when I'm not out on tour or laying low. You'll find all of the recordings I have available on my MUSIC page. Thanks to all of you who have listened to me and supported me through the many years. I am so grateful to all of you. Come out and see me play again sometime soon - I'd love to see you. - David
